Testing for COVID-19 in Sefton

Monday, December 21, 2020

There are different tests you can get to check if you have coronavirus (COVID-19). The test you need depends on why you're getting tested. The 2 main tests are:

  • PCR tests – mainly for people with symptoms, they're sent to a lab to be checked
  • rapid lateral flow tests – only for people who do not have symptoms, they give a result in 30 minutes using a device similar to a pregnancy test

Both tests are free.

Got coronavirus symptoms? Isolate and book a test

If you experience symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, new continuous cough or loss/change of taste or smell) you should get a PCR test as soon as possible and you and anyone you live with must self-isolate until you get your result.

How to get a PCR test

You can book a test online using the government website here, using the NHS COVID-19 app or by phoning 119 between 7am and 11pm. Find out more here.

Please note, we are not able to arrange booking tests, you must do this using one of the above options.

Regular tests if you do not have symptoms

Anyone can now get regular rapid lateral flow tests without having symptoms.

About 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not have symptoms but can still infect others. You should do a rapid test twice a week (every 3 to 4 days) to check if you have the virus. If people test positive and self-isolate, it helps stop the virus spreading.

How to get a rapid lateral flow test

Residents can get tested and collect test kits at a range of local test centres in Sefton. Find information on locations and times on the Sefton Website here.

Rapid test kits are also available from all Sefton’s pharmacies and they can be ordered online at www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests.

Please note, we are not able to arrange booking tests, you must do this using one of the above options.
